I have some incredibly talented friends, many of whom write children’s books.

The most recent I’ve had the pleasure to read is Harriet Hurry-Up and the Oh-So-Slow Day by Allia Zobel Nolan, illustrated by Alexandra Colombo.

Harriet is impatient, and I don’t blame her. Everything takes too long in her busy day, and she asks the Almighty several times for some patience to get her through it.

I can definitely identify with Harriet. I admit I’ve had some conversations with higher powers at key moments in recent days. Like waiting on hold for an hour with an airline on the day every computer melted down. Or when entertaining my elderly and memory-impaired mom in a doctor’s office, with the doc an hour and a half behind schedule. Or getting stuck behind an 18-wheeler truck on a 2-lane road on the way to a friend’s house.

Or the traditional book publishing process. Allia tells me the initial draft of this book was completed in 2007. Now that’s patience.

My words at those times were probably not as kind as Harriet’s when she asks for help. She says, “Please.” I offered up a few choice words that might have included “please” and some others that were a little more, shall we say, colorful.

As for Harriet, with the help of her Gran, G-d and a rescue puppy, she finds patience and learns to be in the moment, instead of wishing away her day.

I need to channel some of Harriet’s learned patience. I bet there are a few kids out there who could as well. And maybe a couple adults.

With engaging illustrations—including a slobbery and adorable pug featured on many of the pages—there’s a lot here to entertain a child.

I love this pug. They show up in many of spreads, usually with a touch of puggy slobber.

Allia Zobel Nolan is the author of more 150 traditionally published titles, many of which are cat-themed or, like this one, have a generous helping of Christian values.

Harriet will be available to purchase in all the usual ways on August 13, but if you’re impatient, you can pre-order from Amazon for delivery on the publication date

  1. Hahaha. Patience is not one of my virtues.
