Photo: Go with the snow

Black and White Sunday

Three dogs laying in the snow, oblivious to the snow falling

Sometimes you just give in, go with the flow…or in this case: go with the snow. In New Jersey, we’ve had more than our share of it this year; the same can be said for most of the Northeast.

The dogs have adapted now; it’s their new reality. Grass is a rarity. Cold is tolerated. And if it comes from the sky, it’s probably snow–and what’s a little snow among friends? They barely notice it, as one can see in the photo.

For those of you in snow-covered climes, have your pets adapted? What do you think they miss the most, living in a snow-covered land? For folks in warmer, less frozen areas of the worlds, please share some sunny thoughts or warm memories to help remind us that Spring is coming.

  1. Hi Y’all!

It makes me cold just lookin’ at y’all! I’m glad y’all live there and not me! LOOK AT ALL THAT SNOW PILED UP!!! Hope y’all have a snow blower and you aren’t just taken a break while diggin’ the humans out!

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

Looks almost like our yard here in Minnesota but out piles are higher and with -18 out this morning, none of us will be playing in the snow! We love the snow, but the below zero temps are not fun because we can’t be out long. They say it will start warming up this week…meaning maybe 20 above, so we shall see. Have fun!

We have a mixed group of dogs around here – two Icelandic Sheepdogs, a Great Pyr mix and a pit bull mix. Guess which ones have adapted best to the snow? 😉 The poor pitty hates going outside and he is constantly cold and mopey even in the house. I think he has doggy SAD (seriously, does that exist, because he has it). The Great Pyr mix wants to live in the snow. It is SO difficult to get him to come inside. The Icies are pretty indifferent – they like being out in the snow but they want to be inside with their people too.

Great picture. What are they all looking at? A snowman?

    -Slimdoggy

    • I have no clue what they were looking at. The snow was coming down so hard, there were few other beasties outside–just a few brave and hungry birds. Most likely the wind was causing branches to sway and moan-and that caught their attention.

Our girls, Veruca and Ava, have definitely adapted to the snow. When the sun shines they will lie down in the driveway and bask in the warmth. However, they have actually adopted a new sport which is watching the bird feeders with the cats from the comfort of the indoors.

    • Love those names! All our cats and dogs love to watch bird TV. We have more than a dozen feeders so there’s always something happening. Best is when a squirrel or two shows up!

  6. Nice snow picture. Looks like you got as much as us. Have a great Sunday.

  7. Bethany says:

Only two out of my three would just lay in the snow like that! Are you sure you want me to tell you about our crocuses, daffodils and daphne’s blooming here? My family in Buffalo has all grumbled at me when I have told them!

  8. Pamela says:

I’m happy that Honey likes snow. Because we get plenty of it up in upstate NY.

Sometimes she barks to go outside just to roll around in it.

I’m glad your pups are making the most of it. There’s no point in complaining about something we can’t do anything about. So we might as well enjoy it.

And just think how good spring is going to feel.

BTW, do you know Mary’s blog, Roxy the Traveling Dog? She’s an artist who travels in an RV with her husband and two dogs. She takes lovely desert photographs. So if you need a burst of sunshine, check them out: http://roxythetravelingdog.com/

  9. If you can’t beat it, join it!

  10. We can relate … Sugar as a Golden Retriever LOVES snow and would lay on the snow while we shovel. Hoping for Spring … Happy Black n White Sunday. Golden Woofs

  11. No snow in Louisiana. I do offer a hint of spring for my winter weary friends today! Stop by Barking from the Bayou today : )

  12. They sure look like they’re enjoying that snow!

  13. ohhh the snow… I would share about the warm temps here…. but ohh to see the changing of the seasons. i don’t get that here 🙁 I was hoping to take the girls up to the snow here, but it hasn’t fallen very low in elevation 🙁 We will wait until next year.

  14. Dawn says:

We’ve definitely had more than our fair share of snow this year too. Today, in fact, is supposed to be pretty bad. And it is the first year I’ve used a coat for my dog Maya, and shoes for them both. But the plus side is that they really love to play in it and I love to watch them.

    • It’s great that they love to play in the snow. I had to buy boots for Tucker because he injured a toenail and couldn’t handle the cold. He didn’t like them, but got used to them. 🙂

  15. My dogs are fine in the snow. They love it. It is the extreme cold that has been causing problems. We have another week of it. Sigh!

    • The cold has been tough on my pups as well. When it gets too cold, Tucker has to wear boots. It hurts his feet otherwise. We’re supposed to get some serious and severe cold this week too. Sigh as well.

  16. Dogs N Pawz says:

We haven’t had much snow here but we did have sleet and ice today. Bummer:( The dogs hated it and I could barely get them to go outside to do their business.

  17. Sadie and I live in New Jersey too, so we’ve been dealing with the same amount of snow. She’s gotten used to it by now and still asks to be let out to play, but it’s not really new and exciting after the winter we’ve had. Sadie now gets all happy and excited when she discovers a patch of grass where the snow has melted. I think we’re both ready for winter to be over at this point.

  18. We’ve been there too! Love Dolly

  19. meowmeowmans says:

We humans would do well to be more like animals. I love that the dogs are just going with the flow when it comes to that snow!

  20. It was gorgeous on Friday. High 50s and sunny. And this weekend was all rain and mud. Unjust, I tell you.

    • Oh, don’t you just hate it when the beautiful weather is wasted on a weekday? Still, I’d take 50 degrees on any day right now; I think it’s supposed to be -4 tonight. Sigh.

  21. Kali says:

I love how they all seem focused on the same thing!

My dog has adapted perfectly to snow. She loves it! I already know she’ll be sad once spring arrives…

    • That’s the fun part, though, it will be winter again. Two years ago we had a giant snow pile in our yard that lasted well into spring. All three dogs would climb all over that pile as it grew smaller and smaller–until it was gone. They loved it.

  22. OMD look at all that wonderful snow 🙂 xxoxxxx

    Mollie and Alfie

    • It is pretty, isn’t it? And so much fun for the dogs. Yet, I have to admit, we’re just a little tired of it. But, spring will be here soon–and with it, lots of mud. In a month or so, I’ll probably be wishing for the snow to come back.

  23. My dogs have never seen snow (we’re in the Caribbean–sending a bucketful of sun-kissed sand and warm surf your way), so they’d probably be really confused. Still, dogs are nothing if not adaptable, and I’d love to see their reaction to snow. With a video camera in my hand 😀

Glad to see yours seem comfortable. I lived a couple of years in NJ, in Montclair, but that was back in the 80’s. Being Mexican, that was my first experience with seven months of winter (well, winter by our standards). Aside from the two weeks a year we went skiing, coexisting with snow was pretty much out of my realm of experience 😉

    • Thanks for the warm thoughts of sand and surf. It’s truly appreciated. I love the change of seasons; spring seems so welcome after a long winter. But I’m a summer girl at heart. Sounds like heaven in the Caribbean. 😀
