Photo: Disgruntled Dawn

Mischief Monday

Cat is obviously unhappy because someone has put undesirable items on her bed.

Dawn, disgruntled

Dawn was displeased. She was annoyed, unhappy, affronted.

Admittedly some cats are stuck in a permanent state of dissatisfaction. But Dawn’s specific disgruntlement today was very much my fault (although that’s often the case due to a late meal, an unacceptable lap configuration or the number of other cats in her general vicinity, which can be blamed entirely on me.)

Dawn was disgruntled because I had the audacity to put Things on Her Bed.

The nerve.

I’ve had that blanket on the dryer for a few months; it was a thank you gift from the lovely folks at Partners for Healthy Pets after I wrote a story about how annual pet checkups are as essential as food and love. When the blanket came, I put it in the laundry room, thinking I’d wash it before putting it away. But then Dawn claimed it as her own–even before I unfolded it.

Dawn isn’t easy to gruntle. (Yes, it’s a word; I checked. And yes, I had to use it, because, well, word nerd that I am, I wondered if the opposite of disgruntled was gruntled. Which apparently it is. Which then got me wondering if you make a disgruntled individual happier, have you dis-disgruntled them? But I digress.)

Dawn is an exacting cat, demanding purr-fection in everything, never quite satisfied unless her specific (and undefined) standards have been met. So when she decided that the soft blue blanket was an acceptable cat bed, I gave it to her on the spot. Literally. On the spot. I haven’t moved it since (except to wash it.)

Which is why she was so offended that I temporarily put two baskets of hangers on Her Bed while I was doing laundry.

Loyal subject that I am to the Queen Who Rules, I quickly removed the objectionable items (but not before taking a picture; I am, of course, a blogger) and all was right with the world.

For now.

A much happier cat.

If that was our house, those hangers and the containers they are in would have been shoved to the floor. Dawn is much better mannered than any of us. Lisbeth sleeps every night on a cat bed covered by a towel in the laundry room. Just like Dawn, if I set something there, she will still find a way to sleep there. Thanks for teaching us a new word. Mom loves it! XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  2. Sheesh… the nerve. Dawn, how do you put up with this?! — Delilah

Delilah and Dawn seem to have much in common. MOL. Delilah is undoubtedly the Queen of the house, and if things are not her way, then she lets it be known by “yelling” at us. Her yell is more of a squeak, but the meaning is clear – something is upsetting her.

  3. slimdoggy says:

That look on her face…We have the dog beds in certain places in the house and when they get moved for cleaning Jack gets a little out of sorts and just moves to another room, but maggie just follows the bed wherever it is.

  4. Ellen Pilch says:

Poor kitty, she does look a little put out having to share with the laundry baskets.

  5. Jen Jelly says:

How dare you put something on her bed? The look on face says it all 🙂 I’m glad you moved your stuff so she could have her rightful bed back, geez.

  6. I always end up moving pillows and things around for Kilo!

  7. Sue says:

LOL Great photo evidence of disgruntle and gruntle!

  8. This is too funny and I can so relate! Mauja and Atka have specific areas on the couch that they like to nap. They become quite upset if someone’s feet or my computer is in their spot. They just sit at the end of the couch and give me ‘the look’ until I make sure their spots are free.

  10. Emma says:

Oh yes, cats do sure get mad when you mess with their supposed stuff.

  11. Mr. N is pretty adaptable but he’ll huff sometimes if we move around too much while he is trying to sleep curled up next to us.

  12. Oh yes! I move things off Rita’s spot on the sofa, and her spot on the bed, and her spot on the guest bed… But she’s not spoiled!

Thanks for the 411 on gruntled. Had wondered about that too, but been too lazy to look it up! 🙂

  13. A kitty of her stature shouldn’t have to share a bed with a basket of hangers! We’re glad you came to your senses.

  14. Brian Frum says:

Trust me, I have seen that same look from my sisters, but it is usually directed at me MOL!

  15. Ruby says:

Oh, that last pic says it all!!! ‘Just don’t do that again….’
Oh man, too funny! When Ma takes my bed cover off to wash it I always bark at her and try and jump on the bed to stop her. I thinks the peeps should just leave our stuffs ALONE! Geesh.
    Kisses,
    Ruby ♥

  16. We totally understand Dawn! Mom and dad realized one day that the 3 cats let them live in their house! Love Dolly

  17. I think you’ll be hard pushed to get anything else on that blanket again, looks like Dawn’s got it covered! 🙂

I’m ok with sharing my bed with my toys, but it is a big bed! 🙂

    I hope you’re having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  18. meowmeowmans says:

Yes, indeed. Everything has its place — and there should not be extra stuff on Dawn’s place!

  19. Jan K says:

Our cat Samantha makes any towel or piece of clothing left laying around into a bed. I will often leave things that I wouldn’t normally so she can enjoy them.
I had to chuckle at how content, and proud of herself for getting her way, Dawn looked in the last photo!
