Winter’s Gift of Shadows

Tucker the dog walks in the snow, casting a blue shadow

That’s a long tail!

From inside my house, I look out at the winter sun and crave the feel of it’s warmth on my skin. But it’s a tease, quite stingy with its heat, and while I turn my scarved and be-hatted face upwards in an attempt to bask in it’s glow, I know better than to take off my gloves, let alone my jacket.

However, the low angle that makes the sun’s rays tepid paints the snow with evocative shadows like the one in the photo above, exaggerating all that is Tucker, including his scruffy fur and long ropy tail.

So I bundle up when I  trek out into the cold to take the dogs out, and while I’m there I take a few moments to appreciate the sun’s artistic winter gift.

And then I shiver in the cold, and wish spring would get here a little faster.

Luckily, it’s still warm enough to enjoy out here…but I agree – I love the deep shadows that winter brings.

Nice photos! *wags* – Gilligan from WagsAhoy.com

Mom gets real frustrated with the shadows in the winter as it makes taking photos so difficult most of the time. Sometimes they are good for a fun shot, though.

  4. Shadows in the snow, simple and beautiful 🙂

  5. We haven’t had any major snowfall this season yet. From the looks at the other regions, I’m getting a little nervous when it does fall it may not stop. So I guess we’ll have snow shadows to play around with also.

    • We’ve been lucky to avoid the huge amounts of snow that the folks further north have received. Instead we have a frozen sandwich of ice, sleet, snow, freezing rain, snow, and ice. And then snow again.

  6. We haven’t had any snow… just a lot of rain! I do like hot chocolate and other “winter foods.”

  7. Irwin says:

I enjoy winter, as long as it is not below -30C. Ali loves the snow!

    • I like winter as long as it’s not completely frozen. I like the snow, but when it’s iced over and the dogs and I have to carefully pick our way across the yard so we don’t trip, slip, or fall through the crust, it’s just not as much fun. 😉

  8. Those are some cool shadow pics. We like snow but only if we’re inside looking at it. 🙂

  9. Robin says:

The winter sun is such a tease! It looks so warm, but it’s rays barely seem to reach the earth. Those are some really cool shadows though!

  10. Love the shadows! We are getting lots of sunshine which means its gotten very cold, we always have to trade one for the other! Love Dolly
