Who will win when a dog and cat play dreidel?
TweetEvery year at Hanukkah, we play the dreidel game.
For those unfamiliar with the activity, you begin with a bunch of something: pennies, chocolate coins, poker chips–something of little value. When it’s your turn, you spin the four-sided top, which has Hebrew letters on it that stand for the sentence, “A great miracle happened there.” Depending on which side lands face up when the dreidel stops spinning, you must do one of four things: put in a piece it a central “pot,” take half of the pot, take all of the pot or do nothing.
Over the years, we’ve collected a rainbow of dreidels of all shapes and sizes. It’s our family Hanukkah tradition to display them in some of my high-class serving bowls, placed decoratively on our coffee table. That’s also where we play.
The table is just the right height for the four-legged members of the household to follow along. Both dogs and cats are fascinated by the spinning dreidels, and it’s become it’s own game trying to guess who will swat, nose or grab the top first.
Who do you think will touch that blue dreidel? Tucker the dog or Athena the cat?
Happy Hanukkah to all those who celebrate!

We guess the cat. Happy Hanukkah!
And I guess you’d be right. 😀
I’m guessing the cat will get to the dreidel first. I know mine would. Happy Hanukkah!
Yeah, that’s true here, too.
I think if there was a prize involved my dogs would be in there first.
Particularly if the prize involved treats, I bet.;-)
I think the dog will give in to the cat, because respect for claws is real. LeeAnna and Cole at not afraid of color
And believe me, Tucker respects Athena and her pointy bits.
I bet the kitty will paw at it first!
You are probably correct. She’s fast!
Happy Hanukkah. All our bets here are on Athena. Mom has to differ about chocolate coins having little value. MOL! Ho, Ho, Ho, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
Thank you! I think your mom is right. Particularly when the coins are dark chocolate.
Your title made me smile but then I saw that colorful collection of dreidels! It takes a lot to distract me from such cute pets… Happy Hanukkah!
Aw thanks. We started putting them in my crystal bowls many years ago. It looks really festive.
BOL! 🙂 the CAT. Golden Woofs
Don’t you know it!
Bet the cat is the winner… cat’s have a sense for spinning things and they can cheat better :o)
BOL. You’re spot on!
Dog Rule!
Unless the cat’s quicker.
We ALWAYS beat our humans to the dreidel at our home – unless it’s the chocolate dreidels our mom makes. She says those are off limits to us! May you have a wonderful Season of Lights!
Thank you. Happy Hanukkah to you as well!
Just learned the rules and history of the game last night. Happy Hanukkah to you!!!
Thank you! It’s a fun game, and we really do play every year.
That is quite the dreidel collection.
It represents years of collecting.
Looks like they are having fun.
They are. They are fascinated by the spinning.
Dreidels look like a perfect toy for Athena. ☺
But every time she pokes at one, it stops spinning. It confuses her.
My vote is for Athena – she has sharper claws!
And she’s a bit faster!
We think that dreidels are made-for-cats toys. Spinny things are irresistible! Happy Hanukkah to you and your family.
Well, everyone knows cats and curiosity, so I’m guessing she couldn’t keep her paws off that thing. Cute pic!
Happy Chanukah! (I don’t know why there are 2 different spellings, but I dated a Jewish guy for 5 years and this was how he always spelled it so it’s the one I always go with.) 🙂
Our money is on Athena. 🙂
Happy Hanukkah, dear friends!
Thanks for the info about the dreidel game. Now that I understand, it does sound like fun – at our house chocolate coins would be a VERY competitive game! Pretty sure a spinning dreidel would be irresistible to cats, so I’ll agree with the majority.
