Photo: Watcher in the night
TweetBlack and White Sunday
Every night, when I say, “Let’s go outside!” it’s not just the dogs who come running. The lights on the deck attract moths–and my cats know that when I open the door, a dazed insect might flutter into the brightness of our laundry room.
A moth in the house provides hunting entertainment and a tasty–if somewhat powdery–treat.
So the cats watch. And they wait.
Because you never know what will fly in the door when it’s opened to let dogs and humans in or out.
The problem (from the cats’ point of view) is I’m one of those people who will try to catch the creature and release it back outside before it is harmed. I know I spoil their fun, but if I can help prevent a pointless death (yes, even a moth, though I know some frustrated felines who would argue), I do so.
So the kitties have to be swift hunters, pulling the moths out the air in a leap and a swat, and then munching on them before I can act.
The cat in the window above is Elsa Clair, who takes her hunting seriously. She’s perched on a counter, keeping an eye on me, so she can be ready to pounce when I open the door.
Pets are keen watchers–and can excel at noticing patterns. If you pick up a leash, it means walkies for the dog. The opening of a certain cabinet indicates dinner time for the cats. What patterns have your pets picked up on, indicating they know what happens next?

Today we are participating in the Black and White Sunday blog hop. Take a look at some of the great blogs featuring black and white photography today:
I love that photo! It’s like you have a guard cat instead of a guard dog.
So cute that she waits for you to open the door so she can hunt! 😀
Cool photo! Very artistic!
We know when Mom and Dad are leaving for work, getting treats, getting ready for a W-A-L-K….lots of stuff! Our kitty takes care of most of the bugs in our house too!
Well, she certainly looks prepared!
Elsa Clair…love her. My guys have those two patterns down, they also know when I walk into my office, it’s work time and they go right into their beds.
She’s ready to pounce info action! Since it’s gotten warm I’ve been giving mine lots of frozen treats. They know the sound of the freezer door opening and they come wait!
Wow! The same thing happens at our house. We head to the door at night and the cats head to the window to watch the moths. As far as patterns, I can only get Veruca to come to the door for a walk if I click the clasp on the leash. She doesn’t respond to anything else, but will come running if she hears the click.
I love this picture.
We often joke about “dog logic.” Me putting on my Keens means a walk to the pond or creek must be forthcoming.
Mr. N is very aware of when I’m getting ready to leave the house and he anxiously scans me for clues if he’s going or not.
That is a wonderful photo! The boys know when we are going for a walk, if we are leaving and they get to go, or if they are going to be left at home. I don’t know how they do it and we’ve even tried to trick them to see if they knew what was happening. I think they understand every single word that we say! BOL!!
If it isn’t too, too hot, Mom and Dad will leave the door to the Catio open. As the upper deck is totally open that means we get some flies and bugs in the house sometimes. Astrid is our great hunter and is on them in a heartbeat. XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
Great photo and happy pouncing!!
