Star Wars Day: A good a reason adopt a nonhuman species

Today is Star Wars Day. For those who are unfamiliar with the holiday, it’s one of those great combinations of sci fi geekery and wordsmithy puns. Because it’s celebrated on May the 4th.

If you are one of the few people on earth who don’t understand, it’s based on the Star Wars phrase often uttered when the good guys are about to head into battle or face a challenge: “May the Force be with you.” May the 4th is like that wish with a lisp.

Anyway, I suppose there are other ways to celebrate Star Wars Day, but I think the best thing to do today is to get to know a nonhuman species. Say hi to the doggo you meet on the street. Stop to let the bookshop cat inspect your purchases.

Or maybe offer to volunteer at your local animal shelter.

Better yet, adopt a nonhuman. There are so many dogs and cats and puppies and kittens, and even rabbits and guinea pigs and ferrets and other awesome souls who need a home.

I think it was the character Obi-Wan-Adoggy who said, “I have a good feeling about this.”

“These are not the dogs you’re looking for, but others wait for you at the shelter.” — Obi Wan Adoggy

Happy Star Wars Day! May the Force be with you — and all the members of your family, human and not.
