How Do I Love Thee, Ball? A Dog Sonnet for #NationalPoetryMonth

Tucker and his beloved Ball.

Tucker and his beloved.

April is National Poetry Month, and of course the haiku-writing animals of Life with Dogs and Cats are celebrating.

Tucker thought he’d expand his capabilities and try his hand…er…paw at writing a sonnet to his Ball.

How Do I Love Thee?

A sonnet by Tucker Terrier Chasing

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
A ball can reach, when thrown out of sight
Through endless sky, for a perfect chase.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Unquiet need, by sun and dark of night.
I love thee freely, a dog’s profound delight.
I love thee purely, bestowing slobber’s glaze.
I love thee with the passion put to use
Tracking scent, in panicked search, obsessed.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost sticks. I love thee with dog breath,
Wags, woofs, of all my life; and, still amused,
I shall but love thee better after fetch.

(With apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning)

If you doubt his words, or his sincerity, the following very short videos express in Tucker’s more typical language, just how much he loves his Ball.

  3. Great poem, Tucker! He’s so cute! Rita has a small squeaky ball that she loves, but not as much Tucker loves his ball. She’s not that much of a “player” – a few minutes and she’s done.
