Every Week is National Dog Week, But This Week It’s Official

This is National Dog Week, celebrated every year in the last full week of September, and a time to appreciate and honor our canine family and friends.

Begun 89 years ago by dog-lover Captain Will Judy, and championed today by author Lisa Begin-Kruysman, it’s a great time to stop and smell your dog’s feet (Trust me; it’s an addictive habit; they smell like popcorn or corn chips.)

Of course my dogs think that every week is National Dog Week. (Of course my cats think every week is National Cat Week as well, but this is Happy Cat Month, so they’ll have to make do.)

I celebrate my dogs throughout the year, but this week — this post — belongs just to them.

Below are a year’s worth of doggy fun!

Dogs in Winter

Snow and more snow. It brings out the puppy in everyone. Though sticks  to chase and chew on are at a premium when the ground is covered.

Lilah, Jasper, and Tucker claim ownership to the Best Stick In The Yard, which might be the only stick in the yard, since it’s covered in snow.

Deep snow doesn’t bother Lilah, even if it’s belly deep. She just leaps through it.

Dogs in Spring

As much as snow is fun to play in, it’s nice to feel grass under one’s paws after the frozen, slippery and sometimes deep snow of winter. And for Tucker, spring means it’s time to Play Ball!

The chase is on; early spring makes it more fun to run.

Dogs in Summer

When you wear a fur coat all year, summer can be a bit warm. A good excuse for a nap, or hanging out in your favorite window seat, watching the Wildlife Channel.

Tucker and Jasper hang out on the deck during the lazy, hazy days of summer.

Sometimes it’s better to chillax in the air conditioned house while watching birds on the high-def TV known as a window. (Favorite program: Real House Sparrows of New Jersey)

Dogs in Fall

Crisp days, cool nights, and a pile of leaves to play in. What else could a dog want? Squirrels to chase! Fall delivers.

Tucker, Jasper, and Lilah love helping with the fall yardwork. If by helping, you mean playing in the leaf piles.

Jasper enjoys the cool weather and the great smells of autumn. Now if he could only catch that squirrel!

Celebrating National Dog Week all year long: each day of each week is a new adventure when you share your life with dogs. Can’t wait to see what each morning brings.
