Every Day is Boxing Day When You’re a Cat

On December 26, people in many countries around the world celebrate Boxing Day. Traditionally, the more privileged class provided gifts for the tradespeople, servants and serfs. While serfs are hard to find these days, the holiday is celebrated with an additional day off, and, as is true for most first-world countries, another reason to shop.

For cats, Boxing Day is any day you find a box–and there are many ways to celebrate. (See 18 Reasons Cats Love Boxes.)

When getting the boot is a good thing

Recently, I decided I needed boots. Not slush-proof, clompy, Winter-is-Coming kind of boots–I already have them–but something stylish that I could wear with skinny jeans or a skirt. After battling the crowds and unsuccessfully attempting to try on 8,762 pairs at forty-seven stores, I came to the conclusion that I had…ahem…large calves. I have not been blessed with thin, model-pretty, fit-in-your-average-size-boot legs.

Nope. Not me. I inherited stubby legs that thicken in the calves, making it very difficult to find stylish boots.  So I turned to Zappos–my favorite online shoe store. (And no, they did not pay me to write this.) On their site, I can actually search for boots designed specifically for people with fat shapely lower appendages.

The other great thing about Zappos is they have free shipping both ways. Which means I can order five pair, try them all on, pick out the pair I like the best and send the rest back. Kinda like having a private shoe sale in my home.

The boots arrived in a huge box arrived just before Christmas. I tried them all on, set aside the one two pair I decided were keepers and put the the rest back in the big box. Between all the to-do and tumult of the holidays, I hadn’t gotten to shipping the rejects back, and left the unsealed box in our dining room until I found the time to return it.

Puss in boot box

When I heard whomping and swishing coming from the dining room, I decided I should check it out. In a home with three dogs and four cats, suspicious noises can spell potential disaster almost as well as complete silence does.

The noise attracted a few other noses, who recognized the sound of trouble in the making–and who wanted to join in. Calvin came first. He knows the sound of boxing fun.

Something is fishy about this box.

When he hears something interesting, Tucker also investigates. There might be food involved. Or toys. Or mischief. It doesn’t matter who starts it; Tucker welcomes shenanigans from any species.

Tucker and Calvin think there are more than boots inside the box.

Tucker cautiously hung back a bit. When there are cats involved, sometimes there are pointy bits. He keeps a watchful distance.

Calvin thinks he should take a closer look

Calvin is pretty sure Elsa Clair is in the box, having fun without him. Though he is also wary of her sharp edges, curious Calvin cannot help himself.

What is she doing in there?

That’s when Elsa Clair pops out, startling Calvin and Tucker, who make a fast escape.

I can’t imagine any better way to celebrate Boxing Day; can you?

OMD, Ma has always had BIG calves! When she was a teenager, boots were all the rage, and she could fit into half of them cause her big calves! And don’t gets her started on knee pads! She couldn’t get rollerblade kneepads to fit over her big calves either! BOL!!! Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s not like she’s a circus freak, butts apparently, the boot peeps think she is!
Anyhu, I’d like to borrow that box…it looks like it could use some shredding to me! ☺

Every day is box day for my cats, but they also enjoy boxing which my long nose often gets in the middle of!

  5. I’m a fan of boxes, I mostly love the box more than the thingy what’s inside… think I have some feline genes lol

  6. I love boots. I own zero pairs! There must be some anti-big calf league in the boot industry. Like Ruby, even as a teenager I couldn’t wear boots. Wait…in the 60’s (I was very young ☺) I owned a pair of white go-go boots. They did not reach the calf. (You can Google them to see pictures.) Yes, they were hideous, but they were boots and they fit over my non-existent ankles below my too big calves! LMAO!!
