Story: My cats love the Olympics

To say I’m a fan of the Olympics would be an understatement. I love the stories, the pageantry, the athleticism. In the summer games, I follow everything from decathalon to diving. In the winter, I watch bobsledding and biathlon, curling to cross country skiing.

I got my love for the Olympics from my dad. He and I would sit mesmerized by the action on our Magnavox 19 inch color TV. He would regale me with tales of Olympians past. I wanted to grow up to be Peggy Fleming or Olga Korbut. (I know, that dates me, but still.)

When I had children of my own, I passed the legacy on to them. I remember my daughter Corinne being so inspired when Kerri Strug stuck that memorable landing off the vault. I can still hear my son cheering on Picabo Street. And all of us thoroughly enjoying the swimming, if only to hear the announcers say the name of Dutch swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband real fast.

Corinne and I were on the phone during the 2010 winter Olympics, determined to buy the moose hats worn by the Americans in the opening ceremony that year.  Now a college graduate working freelance jobs, today Corinne is able to watch much more Olympic coverage that I did back in the day.  And this year, she is tweeting the Olympics, offering her amusing insights and commentary, yet careful not to include any spoilers. (You can follow her @CorinneFTWin).

So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that my cats have become Olympic fans.

Take a look:

At first, Calvin was drawn to the snowboarding competition. He was particularly enamored of the halfpipe.

Calvin could catch that snowboarder. He could.

He watched the competition very closely and was as disappointed as we were that Shaun White didn’t bring home the gold.

Look at that air!

During the team figure skating competition, both Calvin and Elsa Clair were glued to the TV. Elsa Clair was particularly enamored of Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada. I think she has her eyes on Eric.

She’s looking into his eyes.

She taps Megan’s shoulder. ‘Scuse me, can I take this one?

Now she’s ready to take over.

During the pairs figure skating,  Calvin was captivated by the Russian pair, Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov. Watch his paws as he tries to do what’s on the screen.

I can do that!

And that!

And definitely that! Look at my pretty arms!

Yes, my cats are Olympic fans. Everyone can be inspired by these talented athletes. Whether they walk–or skate–on two legs or four.

Are you watching the Olympics? Do your pets watch too? What events would they be good at?

Oh, how cute Calvin and Elsa Clair are sharing your love of the Olympics. BTW, I definitely remember both Olga Korbut and Peggy Fleming. I love how the kitties are so engaged with the action!

    • Thanks! We watch other things on TV, too, but the only programs other than the Olympics that my cats have shown interest in are Nature (when there are birds in the show) and the Kitty Bowl. Oh, and Doctor Who every once in a while. My cats have good taste in TV programming. 😀

  2. HAHA!!! VERY funny!!!
Waffles is enthralled with skiing and chasing the little skier all over the big white screen.
    ; )

Those cats are hilarious. All the better that they’re glued to the TV and not bothering me. Scratchy, the cat I live with, doesn’t care about the TV at all.

  4. Flea says:

That is HILARIOUS!!! Maybe your cats will medal in ’18.

    • Thanks. If cat agility was an Olympic event, I bet Elsa Clair would qualify. And Calvin? His best event would be bug catching. The other two? Their best event would be curling…up into a ball and napping. 😉

    That’s hilarious! Love the photos.

  6. That’s so funny. Love all the pics of his imitations. So cute! Rita usually only watches animals on TV (or people pretending to be animals…) but she’s actually watched a bit of the skating with us. Guess she likes all those whirling twirling fancy colors too! (We love to watch the Olympics and watch pretty religiously every time it’s on.)

  7. Your cats are such ardent fans! Those pictures are hilarious. Neither of the dogs care much for TV.

    • Thanks! It’s usually the cats who watch TV. The only time one of the dogs pays attention is when he or she hears something barkworthy. Of course, if one dogs hears it, they all heard it first and everybody starts barking at nothing. Thank goodness for the pause and rewind buttons!

Adorable! I especially love the one where Elsa Clair taps Megan on the shoulder! 🙂

  9. That’s so funny!

I’d definitely give the cats a gold too! They very graceful and their balance is awesome! 🙂

I’m not a big fan of the TV, so I don’t even watch the olympics, maybe if they introduced a mischief event I might change my mind?

    I hope you’re having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

this cat mom found the photos delightful, and is sure the furry gymnasts think their momcat deserves a medal too, for photography in catching their glorious moments for posterity.
