Cat Video: Grab, Bunch & Kick

My cat Calvin gets a kick out of throw rugs.

Actually it’s several kicks.

And not just throw rugs.

Towels. Laundry. Or in today’s case, a fake “sheepskin” pad I bought as a cat-fur collector (to cover my office chair), but never remember to use.

I keep it on the floor just outside my office door because Jasper likes to sleep on it. Even though it offers no cushioning, it says “bed” to him. But that’s a story for another day.

Why is my cat kicking a rug?

There’s something about the rug that requires Calvin to grab it, bunch it up and kick it heartily with his back feet.

Calvin grabs a throw rug.

Calvin discovers an unbunched rug. Jasper is pretending he has no idea what’s going on. Poor dog wants to sleep on that rug.

He doesn’t seem angry with it. “You evil rug! How dare you lie around the house like that!”

Calvin loves the rug.

The bunching begins.

He doesn’t look like he’s hunting it. “Beware the great panther as he sneaks up on his prey: the elusive Flattened Fake Farm Animal.”

Calvin starts bunching the rug.

The best way to bunch a rug is to flop on your side and use all four feet to claw it toward you. Jasper is not amused.

He doesn’t seem like he’s redecorating. “No, no, no, no. Flat is so last year. You gotta bunch it up like this, give it a few kicks and voila! A decorative blob for your hallway.”

Calvin kicking a bunched-up rug.

Let the kicking begin!

Nope. He’s playing with it. It’s more fun than any toy I could buy. “This is awesome! Grabbing! Bunching! Kicking! It doesn’t get better than this! Whoo-hoo!”

Check out this short video snippet of Calvin in his full kicking glory.

I think I interrupted him.

Another entry for the Cat Codex

It’s one of those rules I’m adding to the Cat Codex, in the Cat Toy section: Objects Are Best When Used For Other Than Their Intended Purpose.

I think it goes in between the sections on The More A Human Spends For It, The More You Should Ignore it and The Box Is Always Better Than The Thing It Contains.

Does your cat grab, bunch and kick? Do your pets do things you don’t understand?

Our guest bath rug is in pieces from the cats doing that silly behavior with it all the time. There must be something in that particular rug they feel the need to attack.

That’s hilarious!! The funniest thing is that you can see Calvin has a plan, he’s really concentrating on bunching that rug. Jasper’s expression is almost as funny as Calvin’s rug habit. 🙂

Calvin that’s pawsome… maybe that’s the feline way to clean your paws? I will try that too… shall I start with the right hindpaw or with the left?

  9. That is so cute, saving the world from one towel, blanket, rug at a time!

What a funny behavior! I’ve never seen a cat do that before. I often wonder what is going on in cats and dogs heads. When Mila and I go for our walks, sometimes theres this little white dog who scrapes his nails in the side walk. I’m unsure if he wants to attack or is just filing his nails? It’s so bizarre. Great photos and video and thanks for sharing. 🙂
