Calvin discovers the music of Carole King

My laptop is a faithful companion. I pour my words into it. I ask it to care for my photos. I use it to create, to share, to connect.

I depend on it.

So when my 7-year-old computer started to fail, I did what I could to keep it going, until I knew it was time to replace it. I held out until I began to make money for my dog and cat writing and then I bought myself a shiny new laptop and a monitor to give me more room  to work.

I needed to migrate the data, and I followed the online directions to the letter, hooking up the two computers so the old one could donate all its knowledge to my new assistant.

I have tens of thousands of photos, so it was going to take a long time. Hours. And hours. Possibly an entire day. I left the two machines to do their thing and I went about my day.

Later that evening, while my husband and I were finishing dinner, I heard the melodic voice of Carole King floating down the stairs.

Tonight the light of love is in your eyes
But will you love me tomorrow

The only person who was in the house at the time was my 20-year-old son–and I was pretty sure he hadn’t discovered my old Tapestry album.

It took about 3 1/2 seconds for me to guess what was going on–about 2 1/2 of which were while I ran upstairs.

Is this a lasting treasure
Or just a moment’s pleasure

Calvin was sitting on my old laptop, and whatever combination of keys he pressed had pulled up my iTunes, found a delightful song and began playing it.

Whatcha lookin’ at? Calvin sitting on the keyboard.

He seemed to find the music quite pleasing.

I, on the other hand, was in near panic. Did he screw up the data migration? Will I have to start it all over again? Could I have lost everything? It was certainly not the first time Calvin had wreaked havoc by simply walking across the keyboard.

I shooed him off the laptop, and checked the progress. All seemed to be in order.

Two minutes later, both computers were in the guest room behind a closed door. Calvin found somewhere less troublesome to hang out. And I had Will You Love Me Tomorrow stuck in my head.

How do your pets help you with your computers or electronic equipment?

We approve of his music choice…great album. Luckily neither Jack or Maggie pay much attention to electronics, so the only work they ever interrupt is cooking as that is something they are expert in.

  2. A cat with a taste for good music!

  3. Oh boy, that was a close call Calvin!!

    Glad it all worked out….

    I hope you’re having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  4. Wow you are a DJ Calvin :o) Can you play something from dad’s rival Rod too?

  5. Leona says:

Calvin has good taste in music 🙂

  6. Emma says:

We dog don’t get messed up with the tech stuff, but those darn cats are always wanting to walk or sit on the keyboard and it makes Mom a nervous wreck!

  7. Ellen Pilch says:

What is it with cats and keyboards?

  8. meowmeowmans says:

Whew! That was a close call, though it appears that Calvin may have some technical skills and knowledge you didn’t know about. 🙂

  9. Maybe Calvin chose that song specifically. He was probably worried he’d messed up your data migration and wanted to make sure you’d still love him. Glad things went smoothly! Luckily rita can’t reach my PC. She’d probably love to see it destroyed since I spend so much time on it!

  10. Okay, so now it is stuck in MY head! I love Carole King music so I don’t mind. ♥

  11. Now if Calvin had started meowing to the music, that woulda been something!

  12. MOL! Calvin, you aren’t the only one. Pierre was assisting while the head peep worked from home today and started a voice call with a remote coworker, who was really confused by who was on the other end of the call!

  13. Cathy Armato says:

Holy Hannah! Had my heart in my mouth on that one. Thank goodness your data migration didn’t crash, that would have been awful! I loved the Tapestry Album, such a classic. My dog Phoebe “helps” me by jumping in my lap & placing her paws on the keyboard, letting me know it’s time to take a break & pay attention to her!

  14. Kitties Blue says:

Mom says that she now has that song in her head, but says that it is okay as it is an old favorite. We kitties are adept at turning on iTunes on her computer, and Astrid is quite good at turning off the computer. Calvin has that “Oops, caught in the act,” look on his face. Glad nothing was messed up. Ho, ho, ho, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
