18 reasons cats love boxes

If you’ve never lived with cats, you may not have encountered this phenomena, but it is a universal truth. If you place a box of nearly any size on nearly any surface, at some point you will find nearly any cat inside the box. Sometimes there are variations of on or under the box, but the attraction is obvious.
But why? In an attempt to understand this secret held close by felines of all varieties, I’ve spent years observing cats, and here are some of the reasons I’ve discovered why cats love boxes.
Reason #1: They’re always the right size.
If the shoebox, fits, wear it.
Reason #2: They help cats be extra sneaky.
I am Dawn, Queen of Sneaky, Empress of Cardboard, Mistress of Disguise.
Reason 3: They come with fun crinkly paper.
…and they get delivered straight to your door!
Reason #4: They make great forts.
No intruder shall pass the ramparts of Fort Feline!
Reason #5: They protect you from dogs.
You’ve gotta ask yourself a question: “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, Tuck?
Reason #6: There’s room for a friend.
Elsa Clair, could you get your paw outta my face?
Reason #7: They make very good hiding places.
They’ll never find me here.
Reason #8: They go with every outfit.
Tell me honestly; does this box make me look fat?
Reason #9: They’re comfortable.
Why yes, I’m quite comfy.
Reason 10: They have corners to rub on.
That hits the spot.
Reason #11: You can swat dogs as they go by and they won’t know it was you.
I think I got Jasper that time.
Reason #12: You can play hide and seek with your brother.
She’ll never see me under this flap.
Reason #13: They’re fun to explore.
This one has an attic and a basement.
Reason #14: You can play kitty inception.
Boxes within boxes.
Reason #15: They fit perfectly, every time.
Classy cats keep their tails and ears tucked neatly inside at all times.
Reasons #16: They’re fun for all ages.
Okay, you two kids can have it first.
Reason #17: They fit in anywhere.
This will look lovely in the sun room…or the kitchen…or the…
Reason #18: They make every cat look even cuter.
My mamma always said, “Cuteness is as cuteness does.” I have no idea what that means.

Thank you so much for this post. My Doodleville family is unanimously opposed to cats. I love watching them – especially when it comes to them playing in/with boxes. I think they are so smart and very entertaining. You captured each photo PAWfectly.

My cat obviously doesn’t know she’s a cat. I often have boxes in varying sizes and large paper carrier bags but beyond a cursory sniff, she shows no interest and I’m left feeling a fool for having a home strewn with empty packaging.
That was great! We especially like #10! I feel bad because whenever I get a box it’s immediately recycled… I need to learn to leave it out for the cats to play in a bit.
