Haiku by Dog: Cave

Haiku by Dog: leafy cave conceals / the dog who does not want to / go back in the house

Ah, the coolness of dirt–or mud–scooped out into a dog-shaped bowl of comfort. That’s where you’ll find any one of my dogs on a warm day.

All three dogs–Jasper, Lilah and Tucker–contribute to the construction of these luxurious doggy havens. I always know when a new one is in development; tell-“tail” dirt-bespotted snouts and paws give it away. For the most part, I let them create their special spots; they’re nearly always tucked away somewhere out of sight, and usually–usually–they don’t get carried away with the digging, carving  just enough to make a dog sized depression and no more. (Though Tucker sometimes needs to be distracted with a good game of Ball, to refocus his terrier tenacity onto something else.)

In today’s Haiku by Dog, Jasper is tucked away under the rhododendron. He’s quite comfortable, and I think the only thing that would entice him out of the leafy darkness would be the promise of dinner. Or a treat. Or…

Oh look, a squirrel!

Do your dogs like to dig? Do your pets have favorite places they like to hang out when they’re outside?

I have the same green cave like you and I love it! I always dig a hole under a bush, then I’m rolling around there and then I watch my kingdom from my secret place. Dirty but happy :o)

    What a fab hidey hole:-)

Love your haiku. I frequently hear myself yelling, “NO DIG!!”

  4. Jasper, we hope you’re not found there…but you probably will be.

Aw that’s cute! Shiner actually likes to lay in the grass where the sun is shining on her. It’s like she’s tanning or something.

    • Jasper likes the sun, too, until it gets too hot. Then he finds a cave. (So do the other pups, thought Lilah–who has gorgeous black fur–is usually the first to head to the shade.)

  6. What a perfect Haiku for this picture! Could not have thought of a better one myself! Jasper, cute as always!xoxox
