Haiku by Dog: Routine

dog's morning routine: stretch, yawn, then ponder whether it's worth getting upToday’s haiku is by Tucker.

Every morning, I drag two dog beds out of my bedroom down the hall into my office.  I can do this because as soon as Jasper and Lilah see that I’m getting ready to leave the room, they pop up out of their beds, offer me a morning sniff and several wags, and wait for me to open the door.

Tucker, on the other paw, barely twitches. “C’mon, Tucker, we’re leaving!” Maybe one eye opens. Then closes.

Meanwhile, Lilah and Jasper have performed their morning floppities, stretches, and dog yoga, and are waiting patiently by the door.

“Leaving now, Tucker.”

Nothing.

I close the door and the two dogs and I head to my office where I set up their beds for the day. I sit down (often disturbing Elsa Clair from my chair which as far as she’s concerned is her bed that she grudgingly lets me borrow occasionally) and open up my laptop to begin work for the day. But I know better than to immediately dive deep into my writing.

A few minutes later I hear the slam of a paw against the bedroom door. Just one. Two scratches would be too much effort.

I open the door to a squinting scruffy dog whose entire body is one giant bedhead. He yawns, and plods past me straight to one of the beds in my office, where — with a sigh that sounds like the air brakes on a Manhattan bus — plops down and goes directly to doggy dreamland.

Whatever Tucker does, he does hard. Plays hard. Sleeps hard.  It’s as if he has only two speeds: terrier and sleeping. Nothing in between.

What about your pets? Do they bounce out of bed ready for action? Or are they slow starters in the morning?

We prefer to sleep in a bit but we stumble downstairs and into our office beds when Mom gets up. After she works for an hour or so, we are ready to pound the pavement with our paws.

  4. That’s an interesting routine ; it could be a cat’s one. Purrs

  5. We’re cats…definitely slow starters. The only thing that gets us moving fast is if we hear the sound of a can of food being opened.

Tucker sounds like a dog after my own heart. Ha.

  7. Daisy says:

We have a similar morning routine – moving Daisy’s bed from DD’s room into my office for the day. She only gets up after DD does, and sometimes only after DD is done in the bathroom. The best thing is that if we sleep in, she sleeps in too and never wakes anyone up. 🙂

    A giant bedhead – lol!!

  9. Kitties Blue says:

Tucker is more like our Mom than any of us; though, some of us will immediately return to bed after breakfast. We have just started writing a bit of haiku and are really enjoying it. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
