Haiku by Dog: Invitation

Haiku by Dog: game of chase begins / with formal invitation / a bow: want to play?

Today’s haiku is by Lilah.

Do you want to play a nice game of chase? (Extra points to any fan who correctly guesses the origination of that line.)

You’d think with three dogs that tons of playing and chasing happen. And you’d be wrong.

Usually, Tucker is preoccupied with his Precious, his beloved ball.

Jasper, the 74-pound comfort hound, would rather relax. Unless there’s a squirrel. Or a deer. Or a bird.

Lilah, our Border Collie mix, wants to play. She wants to run and chase and tease and run some more. She resorts to all kinds of tricks to try to get her brothers interested. She steals Tucker’s ball. Or she’ll simply stare at him, which drives the terrier nuts. Sometimes he’ll play, but he either gets distracted by The Ball, or the chase ends in a hump, which is not Lilah’s ideas of a good time.

However, every once in awhile, she is able to entice Jasper into a Chase. It doesn’t last too long; Jasper is a bit of a princess when it comes to play, and he’ll simply stop if it gets too exciting. But during the game, Lilah is at her Border Collie happiest — running full out, zig zagging and feinting across the yard, always just out of reach.

How do your pets get along with others? Do they play together?

we dogs are gentlemen&girls … it always starts with a formal bow … humans can learn a lot from us :o)

  2. Bentley and Pierre love to play together. Once they get started they often hear, “Take it outside, boys!” Hah!

    • Inside the house, the rules change. Tucker and Jasper and Lilah love to chase each other around the dining room table, through the kitchen, into the family room and back. Then I take them outside…and it stops. Dogs. Gotta love ’em.

Katie and I used to play chase and wrestle all the time, but as Katie got older, she couldn’t play as much. Then Bailie came onto the scene and she and I play all the time. For some reason we enjoy it most in the evenings, or early mornings.

It looks like a fun game is about to begin! Dogs are so cute when they bow like that. My kitties get along with one another, but I don’t know how well they would do with new pets. Manna does well with humans though.

Oh I love seeing that “come on and play” bow dogs do with that playful expression on their faces! 😀

  6. Great haiku! 🙂 Dogs definitely like to play with others. Cats like to as well, but don’t make a big song and dance about it! MOL

  7. Me and Wally play together…usually a good game of Thundering Herd of Elephants throughout the house. ~Ernie

What a wonderful photo! It looks like the fun was just about to begin!

    • Bow as in rhymes with “ow” or “cow.” You know, I thought about that when I wrote the haiku; wondering if it would be clear that I was talking about what is called in the dog world a “play bow.” So thank you for answering my question. English is such a weird language. “Bow” can rhyme with “cow” or “go.” “Bough” can also be pronounced to rhyme with “go.” Yet exchange the “b” for an “r” and “rough” rhymes with “stuff.” Makes no sense. And hopefully, that puts a bow (rhymes with “go”) on it. 😀
