Technology and Pets: Your Chance to Win a FroliCat BOLT

I adopted Dawn and Athena together as kittens, and I did the same a few years later when Calvin and Elsa Clair came to live with us. The theory is that kittens from the same litter are bonded, and will enjoy each other’s company.

So much for theories.

Each of my four cats likes their space more than each other. Thus, when I want to play with the kitties, I always seem to find myself several appendages short, as I can’t play with everyone at the same time, and cat language has no word — indeed, no concept of — “share.”

When I flick a cat fishing toy at Elsa Clair, the other three cats know better than to get between our tiny dragon and her prey. They may watch, from the bleachers, preferably from the nosebleed seats. Failure to do so may result in sharp and pointy consequences.

Because of this, when I do attempt to play with several cats at time, I wind up with my arms stretched out, a pole in each hand, and another pole stuck in the back pocket of my Levis. Imagine one of those old-time one-man bands, but with cat toys.

It isn’t pretty. And, no, I will not post photos.

This is why I like electronic pet toys. Because I can set one up far enough away that one cat can play with it, while I entertain another. And I can keep an eye on everyone. (No cat should be left unsupervised when playing with toys.)

Recently, my cats were sent a FroliCat BOLT automatic laser light to test.

FroliCat BOLT

FroliCat BOLT

Just as the FroliCat FLIK  is designed to appeal to cats who love to play with string, the BOLT  is meant for kitties who want to get that elusive Red Dot.

asdfasd

Must. Get. Red. Dot.

It’s a pretty cool gizmo, and my laser-loving kitties — specifically Calvin and Athena — come running as soon as they hear the whirring sound that means I’ve turned it on..

Got it!

The Red Dot zips and zooms, stops and starts, making it tantalizingly chaseable. An adjustable mirror allows me to control where the dot goes: near, far, on the floor, on the wall. I can also use the toy the old-fashioned way — freezing the dot and using the BOLT like an ordinary cat laser toy.

Athena the hunter ponders her next pounce.

The BOLT is entertaining enough that two cats can almost share it. The feline version of taking turns is, “It’s my toy, until I get bored and walk away. Then it’s still my toy, but since you’re playing with it and I don’t want to get swatted, I’ll watch until you get bored. Or until I swat you and take over.”

Who will pounce first and claim Red Dot?

A rare three-cat game. Calvin watches, Athena swats, and Elsa Clair provides color commentary.

Want to see it in action? Watch Calvin test it out in the short video below. Look for a few surprise visitors, including Athena — who was watching the toy the entire time.

DISCLAIMER: I was given a FroliCat BOLT to test — and one to give away — but was not paid for this story.

  2. I don’t have a cat, but I think that’s pretty cool. I could sit around and watch them play with that for hours…

  3. easy rider says:

oh that woud be a toy for me too… oh how great the living room of that staff would look :o)

  4. Linda Szymoniak says:

We have three cats. My Moko isn’t much for playing with toys, but the other two – Arata and Koneko – just LOVE chasing a laser light. Even one of my dogs – my deaf hound girl, Ran, loves chasing the light.

  5. Looks like hours of fun!

  6. Kitties Blue says:

We had one of these and loved, loved, loved it. Unfortunately the light kept working but the motor stopped. We’ve been wanting Mom to get us another one. We sure would love to win. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  7. Layla says:

This is the only Frolicat we don’t have and I like donating them to the shelter.

  8. Emma says:

OMD! My sister Bailie and cat bro Bert are obsessed with capturing that red dot. I need one for them!

  9. What a cool cat toy! Our dog Buzz is a closet cat as he likes to chase laser dots as well 😉 I might just enter to try and win a FroliCat BOLT for our big boy!

  10. Lol, love the line about looking like a one man band, but with cat toys!

I so could have used this when we had our beagle! She was addicted to the laser light and we had to “buzz her” (as we called it) three times each and every day! She was nutty. But she was also super fit!

  11. I’ve never tried playing with lasers with Mr. N. I wonder if he would like it. With dogs, they warn about the chance of them becoming obsessive, so I’ve never tried.

  12. That looks like a fun toy!

  13. OMC How adowable awe they. Dat looks like a lot of fun. Hope we win. Hope y’all hav a pawsum week.

    Luv ya’

    Dezi and Lexi

  14. We had a bolt and we LOVED it. But it stopped working so we would love to win a new one.

  15. meowmeowmans says:

That sure does look like a fun toy! We bet Zoe would love it lots!

  16. Robin says:

These are wonderful toys! Cinco and Manna have one and they just love it. Manna particularly loves it. It is nice to be able to catch my breath for a moment and let them play with the Frolicat Bolt for a few minutes. Every playful kitty needs a toy like this!

  17. Kim M says:

He was adopted, but one of my foster dogs thought he was a cat. He loved to chase the laser and the flashlight. He was hilarious! But then again, its not every day you see a great dane puppy trying to climb a wall to get to a red dog!

  18. I’m totally sad your not going to post the pic of you and all the toys! We don’t have any cats but I know some Kitties who would LOVE it!

  19. Connie says:

well my own kitties have something similar.. this might be fun to give to the foster kittens 🙂

  20. Ellen Pilch says:

Great photos! I love the first one with all 3 dogs.

  21. Tammy Horn says:

I have a cat room dedicated to former rescued ferals. They have lived a life full of fear and trauma. Now they live a life of luxury. I also have a kitten room for foster feral kittens. This would be happily enjoyed by any of the special kitties in my life.

  22. Angelica says:

My cats would go wild for this toy! They’re sisters, rescued from a local no-kill shelter. They were found next to a dumpster. The runt (who somehow survived!!) looks like a furry Golem.. I named her Smeagol. They just turned 10 this year, still as playful as ever and they LOVE/ haatte.. laser pointers. 🙂

  23. Arielle says:

My cat Grayboy would love the FroliCat! He has difficulties playing on his own and loses interest in a toy the minute it stops moving. A FroliCat would engage him more so he could play on his own.

  24. Barbara Montag says:

I have two cats Snotty and Lucy who would go crazy for this!
    thank you

  25. What a cool gadget! They sure look like they are having fun!

  27. Donna L says:

Our little kitty boy would enjoy this.

  28. Sheila K. says:

This is such a cool toy. A friend of mine has a dog who loves to play with this!

  30. Holly E says:

My 5 playful cats would enjoy this for hours.

Marvin and Clarence would have hours of fun with this. And my hand wouldn’t get tired.

  38. Unfortunately my cats aren’t fond of the red dot. My Memphis who passed last Oct. did, but would obsess so I had to limit the use of the dot.

  39. Carol Bryant says:

OMD look at the fun they are having – what a fab product – and you take such great images, too, Susan.

  40. Laura S says:

We have 3 cats who love to play. Every night at least one of them will jump up onto the coffee table and start pawing at the laser toy trying to get us to play with them, so this would be perfect for us!

  41. We’ve had one of these for a few years now… and believe it or not, the Tzus just love this, so it’s not just for cats! Little dogs love the Bolt too!

  42. I’ve heard great things about the FroliCat Bolt, and I believe Milita would love one! She loves to chase the little red dot around.

  43. Jennifer Heintz says:

I have two cats who are brothers from the same litter. These two are as different as day and night, but they would both appreciate the FroliCat Bolt. What could be more fun for them?

  44. Abby Chesnut says:

neato! Our two cats, Smooshie and Mr. Kitty would love this!

  45. Not only my cat, but my sister in law’s dog would like this!

  46. Michelle W says:

I have three cats who love lasers. They would play all day if they could but eventually my arm gets tired and they have to play with other things. They would love this toy so much.

  47. wendi says:

my baby boy Enzo would have a blast with this i know it

  48. Linda R says:

My son’s three cats would absolutely love this. It would keep them busy for sure.

  49. Frankie and Daisy would really enjoy this. They love laser. Although I read that cats can tell when it’s not controlled by a person and are less interested. I’d love to test this out.

  50. clynsg says:

We have 6 cats, and I am pretty certain that all of them, even the oldest (16 yrs. old) would enjoy this. The only problem I can foresee would be that the grandchildren would also enjoy it!

  51. Novroz says:

That looks like a fun game for cats. Gembul, our family cat, would definitely like that

  52. Barbara Adams says:

the cats are so over dangly toys, or the overly cutsey ones..they are straight up snobs when it comes to cat entertainment…but this ? this is just science-y enough to nudge their inner kitten and play
